Coach Schools

Coaching athletes is one of the most challenging endeavors you will probably ever be involved in and it can be one of the most rewarding. To help you meet the challenges and obtain the rewards of coaching shooters, the National Rifle Association, USA Shooting, and the Civilian Marksmanship Program, as partners in the program, all encourage you to participate in the Coach Education Program. The Coach Education Program (CEP) is a cooperative effort of these three major competitive shooting organizations and is administered by the NRA.

How does the CEP work?

The Coach Education Program provides a logical, multi-step pathway with the ultimate goal of developing the best shooting coaches in the world. Several key principles have guided the development of the structure of the Education Program and Certification Requirements:

  • Directly related to the competencies of the athletes
  • Logical, clear progressions
  • Comprehensive in scope
  • Effective, efficient, with clear benefits
  • Delivered in a high quality manner

The content and curriculum is driven by what is needed by a coach to succeed at each level. The basis of this structure is in its flexibility and adaptability. It will not only accommodate innovation, but will encourage and foster it. When innovative advancements occur, the Coach Education Program quickly takes advantage of them and delivers them to our coaches and athletes. All coach schools and materials are updated biennially to ensure the most up-to-date information is presented.

The current structure and progression of coaching credentials is found in this document.

Using this structure, courses across a broad spectrum of topics that meet the needs of the coaches at all levels will be developed or updated and delivered by the NRA, USA Shooting, and the CMP (sport-specific, advanced sport science and management courses). Other general courses will be those offered through other institutions and organizations such as the American Sport Education Program (ASEP). The goal will be to continually add and update courses so that coaches at all levels have access to the best, most current training information.

Shooting Coach School

The coach school is the heart of the program. The instructors use up-to-date materials and PowerPoint presentations to present coaching methodology and a variety of learning activities for all participants.

The registration fee includes a copy of the discipline-specific coach school student study guide, rulebooks and other materials to help you with the details of running a successful program. After attending the school and reading the student material, participants complete a open-book test as homework during the first evening of the course. The test is graded in class, reviewed for understanding, and then submitted to the NRA Coach Trainer by the instructor for credential processing. Upon successful completion of the coach school you will be a Coach (Level 1) (or Youth Trainer if under 18 years old) in that discipline. A Coach Credential Card is sent to the student. Please allow 6-8 weeks for processing.

What is taught in the school?

The certification school is two days of sports-specific lessons designed to teach the coach candidate the basics of coaching. The following general subjects are taught:

  • Introduction to the Coaching Program
  • Safety and Risk Management
  • Competition Events
  • Rules
  • Equipment and Facilities
  • Fundamentals of Shooting
  • Shooting Positions
  • Sports Psychology
  • Training Planning
  • Running Quality Programs
  • How To Conduct Tournaments

Who teaches the coach school?

The NRA Coach Schools are taught by National Coach Development Staff who are Certified Coaches that have been carefully selected, based on their talents and expertise in the areas of sports, education, coaching, athletics, and shooting. In addition, these coach school instructors have attended special training sessions on how to conduct informative and enjoyable schools.

How can I sponsor a school in my area?

The NRA's Education and Training Division schedules coach training schools, shooting clinics, shooting seminars, and American Sport Education Classes.

The NRA is accepting requests to host smallbore and air rifle, pistol, shotgun and high power rifle coach schools, competition shooting clinics and coaching seminars. For information on how your organization can sponsor one of these events, click here for a Sponsor's Guide. For information on Shotgun Coach Education, contact Don Sipes (703-267-1401 or dsipes@nrahq.org). For information on Rifle or Pistol Coach Education, contact Marcus Raab (703-267-1589 or mraab@nrahq.org).
