The Law Enforcement Activities Division is proud to associate itself with a highly-trained cadre of adjunct instructors from around the country that are frequently utilized to conduct and assist in our firearm instructor development schools. These instructors represent the best of the best in today's law enforcement training community.
John Beehner Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
John is currently a law enforcement officer with over 16 years of civilian law enforcement experience. Having started his career as a seasonal officer with the Ocean City, MD police department in 1989, John currently serves as a patrolman with the Monroeville, PA police department, where he has been working since 1993. He has been a department firearm instructor since 1996, where he not only conducts his agency's in-service training, but also instructs at two of the local police academies. John is a military veteran; he spent 12 years in the Pennsylvania National Guard, and attained the rank of Sergeant prior to his honorable discharge. His last six years of service were spent supervising the training of over 60 soldiers. He holds a B.A. in Criminology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, is a certified instructor in handgun, shotgun and patrol rifle, and is also a Glock armorer. John is an active member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearm Instructors (IALEFI), the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and the National Rifle Association. |

Roy Bergman Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Roy is a retired Missouri State trooper with over 37 years of law enforcement experience. After a brief military career in the U.S. Army, Roy joined the Missouri State Highway Patrol, working his way from trooper to Division Director of the Research & Development Division. He spent time as an instructor and assistant director of the department's training division and academy, as well as commanding Troop F in Jefferson City, MO. After retiring, Roy was named the interim Chief of Police of the Wentzville, Missouri police department until a permanent chief could be retained. Roy has been teaching firearms-related classes to law enforcement officers for over 30 years. He hold a B.A. in Criminal Justice Administration from Lincoln University, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy's 82nd session. |

William (Bill) Campbell Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Bill has been involved in law enforcement in both military and civilian agencies since 1985. He spent a total of 11 years as a military policeman with the U.S. Marine Corps serving as a desk sergeant, watch commander and training coordinator. Since 1992, Bill has been a police officer for the Gilbert Police Department in Arizona. Bill has served the department as a patrolman, bicycle officer, field training officer and recruit training officer in Arizona's largest formal police academy. He is a certified operator and instructor in all police weapons systems including, handguns, shotguns, sub-machine guns, precision rifles, less lethal systems, chemical munitions, diversionary devices and the Firearms Training System (FATS-3). Additionally, Bill is a certified instructor in defensive tactics, high risk traffic stops and serves AZPOST as a subject matter expert in the area of firearms training and police physical fitness. Bill also serves on the department's critical incident stress management team, which assists officers in dealing with traumatic events. Bill has served with the department's Emergency Response Unit (SWAT), in both high risk entry, precision rifleman and team leader capacities and additionally serves as the SWAT training coordinator. Bill is a member of the American Society of Law Enforcement Training (ASLET), the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA), and the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI). Bill regularly presents at both the ASLET and IALEFI Annual Training Conferences and has written articles published in the Police Marksman and IALEFI's The Firearm Instructor magazines. Wes Doss Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Wes is a former police officer with over 13 years of civilian law enforcement experience, and has spent the last 10 years with the Mohave County, Arizona Sheriff's Office. During his tenure with the Sheriff's Office, Wes served as patrol Sergeant, Detective, and Patrol Deputy. Wes' last assignment was as the supervising sergeant of his agencies firearms training unit and as the team leader/training coordinator of the agency's 17-man Tactical Operations Unit (TOU). Prior to embarking on his law enforcement career, Wes served as a Military Police officer with the U.S. Army and is still active in the U.S. Army Reserve with over 21 years of service. Wes holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Criminal Justice Administration from Bienville University of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and has recently started on a program towards a doctorate in psychology. Wes holds numerous firearms and tactics instructor certifications from the U.S. Army, the NRA, Arizona POST, the Smith & Wesson Academy, SigArms Academy, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the U.S. Marine Corps. Wes is also heavily involved in martial arts, having studied a variety of different styles for well over 25 years, holding black belt and instructor ratings in Hapkido and Hwa Rang Do. Wes has been very active in the world of writing and publishing. In addition to having articles published in the ASLET magazine, The Trainer, SWAT magazine, and the NTOA's publication The Tactical Edge, Wes is the author of Train to Win, a training psychology/philosophy book focused on law enforcement and military trainers and professionals. Wes is an active member of the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA), The American Society of Law Enforcement Training (ASLET), The International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), The Military Police Regimental Association (MPRA), The United States Deputy Sheriffs Association (USDSA), The International Association of Counterterrorism & Security Professionals (IACSP) and the NRA. |
Walter W. Dunkling Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Walt is a former Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), having served for over 30 years. With a B.S. in Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University of Rutherford, New Jersey, Walt was stationed in the Jacksonville, Florida; Memphis, Tennessee; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania field offices. He has investigated a wide variety of criminal cases including organized, white-collar and reactive crimes, specializing in bank robbery, kidnapping, and extortion violations. He became an FBI firearms and defensive tactics instructor in 1972, and later coordinated the semi annual firearms training sessions for the Philadelphia field office SWAT team. Walt was promoted and transferred to the FBI Academy's training division in 1992 where he served in the firearms training unit (FTU) and the practical applications unit (PAU) until his retirement in 1996. He then returned to the FTU as a contract firearms instructor for the next three years, retiring a second time in 1999. During his career with the FBI, Walt received over 35 commendations from seven different bureau directors. Prior to his service in with the FBI, Walt served with the U.S. Air Force as an aero-medical evacuation specialist. He is a former competitive skeet shooter and is still an active member of the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA). Walt is also a member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA), the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), and the NRA. |

Mark Fricke Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Mark is a retired police officer from Prescott, Arizona with almost 28 years of law enforcement experience. After four years as a Security Police officer with the U.S. Air Force, Mark went to work with the York, Nebraska police department, where he remained for the next three and a half years. Mark went on to spend the next 20 years in the Prescott, Arizona Police Department where he retired in 2000 as a Sergeant. During his career with Prescott P.D., Mark served as their chief firearms instructor as well as the primary trainer and member of their SWAT team. He is a certified instructor in all disciplines of firearms (handgun, shotgun, rifle, patrol rifle, sub-machine gun, long-range rifle, and tactical), as well as less lethal munitions, chemical munitions, and several defensive tactics disciplines. Mark has served on the Arizona Department of Public Safety's Concealed Weapons Advisory Committee, and is the founder/owner of his own firearms training company. He is a past Vice President of the Arizona Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors Association (ALEFIA), and is a member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), where he has also been a frequent presenter at their national conferences. Thomas Gentry Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Tom is a retired Highway Patrol Officer from the Colorado State Patrol. In 1994, after retiring with 26 years of service, Tom continued his law enforcement career, serving another five years with the Chaffee County Sheriffs Office. During his 30+ year law enforcement career, Tom has been involved in the teaching of law enforcement firearms training since 1976, and received his Colorado Master Firearms instructor rating in 1984. He has been teaching in an adjunct capacity for the NRA's Law Enforcement Activities Division since 1984 as well. Prior to his law enforcement career, Tom served six years with the Colorado Army National Guard. He holds a A.S. in Police Science from Trinidad State Junior College and is an Endowment Member of the National Rifle Association. |

Jess is a retired Captain from the Colorado State Patrol who, after having served for seven years as the Under Sheriff of the Las Animas County, Colorado Sheriff's Department, is currently working with the Department of Homeland Security training our future agents. Prior to his law enforcement career, Jess served in both the Navy and the Marine Corps. He received an A.S. from Trinidad State Junior College in Gunsmithing & Police Science, and is a certified firearm instructor by the state of Colorado, the FBI, and the NRA. Jess is also a part-time professor at the Trinidad State Junior College in the gunsmithing program, and is a noted expert on firearms in the state of Colorado. Jess is a volunteer NRA referee for PPC competition. |

Scott Gustafson Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Scott came to the Law Enforcement Activities Division after he retired from the Phoenix, Arizona, police department in 1997. With 20 years of service, Scott spent 12 of them assigned to the Phoenix Police Regional Training Academy as a firearm instructor. Scott is a Vietnam veteran where he served on small boats on the rivers of South East Asia and is retired from the United States Navy after 28 years, as a Chief Petty Officer. Scott began his NRA career as an adjunct instructor in 1990, and came on board as a full-time staff instructor after his retirement. Scott is a certified armorer on most of the semi-auto pistols and shotguns being utilized by law enforcement today and is certified as a Handgun/Shotgun, Tactical Handgun, and Patrol Rifle instructor. In addition to his duties as an instructor, Scott is responsible for all data entry and maintenance of the divisions Technical Information Center. He is a member of the Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA), International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), American Society for Law Enforcement Training (ASLET), International Law Enforcement Trainers and Educators Association (ILEETA), and is an Benefactor Member of the National Rifle Association. |

Jeffrey J. Hall Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Jeff is a retired lieutenant from the Alaska State Police Department with 20 years of service. His final three years with the troopers were spent as the commander of the Department of Public Safety Training Academy in Sitka, Alaska. Prior to his assignment at the academy, Jeff was assigned to each geographical area of the state in a broad variety of assignments. He worked in patrol, traffic, judicial services, a one-man remote "bush" post, narcotics, warrants, and as a major crimes investigator. He also spent 11 years on the statewide Special Equipment Response Team (SERT) team, responding to critical incidents across Alaska. On SERT, he operated as a sniper, on the perimeter and entry teams, and as the assistant team leader. Jeff has been a firearm and control tactics instructor since 1980. He has attended training at all of the major firearm schools in the country, and has completed over 1,500 hours of specialized training in weapons, use of force and special operations. He is a member and frequent contributor to American Society of Law Enforcement Training (ASLET), and International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI). Jeff holds black belts in two martial arts disciplines and is a competitive handgun shooter. He has a bachelors degree from Washington State University and graduated from the Administrative Officers Course at the Southern Police Institute in Louisville, KY. He is a Life Member of the NRA. |

James E. Hosfelt, Jr. Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Jim is currently a law enforcement officer, with 17 years of civilian police experience, with the Dover, Delaware Police Department. Jim began his career in 1988 as a uniformed officer with the patrol division. He has worked in the Criminal Unit, Selective Enforcement Unit, and currently serves as Detective Sergeant with the Dover Police Departments Drugs and Vice Unit. Prior to becoming a police officer, Jim served with the U.S. Air Force as a Security Policeman for eight years. His assignments included Dover AFB, DE, Kunsan AB, Korea, and Ellsworth AFB, SD. In addition to his regular duties as a detective, Jim also serves as the Dover Police Department's Special Operations Response Team (SORT) Commander and Lead Firearms Instructor. In both capacities, Jim conducts proficiency training for all members of his department, as well as instructing recruits at both the Dover Police Academy and the Delaware State Police Training Academy. Sgt. Hosfelt is a certified instructor with the handgun, shotgun, and sub gun as well as tactics for Hostage Rescue and High Risk Warrant Service. His memberships include the Delaware Law Enforcement Marksmanship Association, National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA), Mid Atlantic-Great Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network (MAGLOCLEN) and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). Jim is a past recipient of the NRAs Law Enforcement Officer of the Year and serves as volunteer referee for the National Police Shooting Championships. |

Robert L. (Bob) Jones Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Bob is a retired Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), having served with them for 27 years. While with the FBI, he was assigned to the New Orleans, Louisiana, and the Washington, D.C. field offices, as well as having been assigned to the headquarters staff. He became a firearms instructor for FBI training in 1977; and was a full time staff instructor assigned to the FBI training academy's firearms training unit (FTU) prior to his retirement. Bob continues to work as a contract firearms instructor at the academy today. Bob is an active member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI (SFSAFBI), the North-South Skirmish Association, American Legion Post 28, and is a life member of the NRA. |

Edward (Ed) Marsters Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Ed is a retired police officer from Anchorage, Alaska, with eighteen years of police experience. He worked patrol, investigations and under cover drug enforcement during his career as well as being a lead firearms instructor at the Anchorage Police Department. Ed is currently a range master/firearms instructor for the State of Alaska Department of Public Safety Training Academy. Ed is also certified as a Police firearms Instructor/Trainer by the Alaska Police Standards Council and teaches operator and instructor classes throughout the State of Alaska. Ed has attended a multitude of firearms schools throughout the country and is a member of the International Wound Ballistics Association (IWBA), the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), the American Society of Law Enforcement Training (ASLET), and is a life member of the NRA. |

David Miller Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Dave is a retired Special Agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), where after 30 years of service, he retired in 1998. He was extensively involved in firearms and SWAT team tactics training since 1972 and continues to stay involved in law enforcement as he is currently a reserve police officer with the Eureka, Missouri Police Department. He has been a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician and holds numerous law enforcement firearms training certifications throughout the country. Dave has a B.S. in Accounting/Political Science and is an advisory board member for the Jefferson College Police Training Institute. Dave received the FBI Medal of Valor in 1991 and is an Eagle Scout. He is a member of the Missouri Peace Officers Association, the FBI Agents Association, FBI National Academy Associates, and the National Rifle Association. |

Ronald (R.K.) Miller Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
R.K. is currently a lieutenant with the Huntington Beach, California Police Department where he is assigned as a patrol watch commander. With over 27 years of law enforcement experience, R.K. has worked in a variety of assignments including as a Field Training supervisor, FTO, SWAT, detective, narcotics and gang suppression. R.K. is a court-qualified expert on heroin influence, street gangs and white supremacist groups. He is an instructor in a variety of disciplines including firearms, SWAT tactics, chemical agents, less lethal munitions and diversionary devices. In addition to working as an NRA Law Enforcement adjunct instructor, R.K. serves as an adjunct instructor for the Golden West Police Academy, several other private training facilities. He is a USMC Vietnam veteran, holds a B.S. from Long Beach State University and has authored numerous articles which have appeared in various publications including Tactical Edge, Dispatcher, Law & Order, and Police magazines. He is a member of the American Association of Law Enforcement Trainers (ASLET), the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA), the National Rifle Association (NRA), and serves as a board member of the California Association of Tactical Officers (CATO). |
Darrel Schenck Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Darrel comes to the NRA's Law Enforcement Activities Division with over 20 years of firearm experience and experience in small unit tactics, law enforcement operations and high threat security operations. After his enlistment as a decorated U.S. Marine and veteran of Desert Shield & Desert Storm, Darrel began his law enforcement career working with the New Orleans Police Department. After a couple of years, he moved over to spend the next 13 with the Gulfport, MS PD. While in Gulfport, Darrel worked in patrol, motors, vice/narcotics, and the training division. While at the training division, Darrel became range master for the entire department, becoming responsible for the firearm training and curriculum of the agency. After completing his first firearm instructor school in 1996 in Handgun and Shotgun, he went on to acquire certifications in Tactical Handgun, Tactical Shotgun, Patrol Rifle, Select-Fire, and Precision Rifle. In 2004, Darrel left the Gulfport Police Department to deploy as a security contractor in Iraq, working as a personal protection specialist for several high profile individuals for Blackwater USA. Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, Darrel returned stateside and continued working to help secure the areas of New Orleans most affected by the hurricane, and to help bring some stability and security to the Gulf Coast areas. Darrel now resides in the Midwest, where he currently serves as a reserve officer with the Newton, KS police department, working narcotics and serving as a member of their SWAT team. A life member of the NRA, Darrel is also a member of the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA), International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA), and the American Sniper Association (ASA). |

Dan Schlernitzauer Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Dan is a retired police officer from the Lexington, Kentucky Division of Police, with 24 years of service in law enforcement and corrections. In addition to assignments in patrol, traffic, and selective enforcement (motorcycles), he spent nine years as the Emergency Response Unit Training Coordinator with the tactical team assignments of sniper and tactical emergency medical services. He is a Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC) certified instructor for police firearms and traffic law enforcement. Dan is also the co-author and primary instructor for the KLEC-certified police sniper school and traffic radar operator course curriculums. He is a National Range Officers Institute certified range officer and can serve as an OIC or Range Safety Officer for military range complexes. The son of a world-class shooting coach and a three-time national women's pistol champion, Dan learned and now teaches the benefits of a sound foundation in the fundamentals of marksmanship. He has shot competitively since age 13 and shoots at the Master or Expert level in NRA PPC, High Power Rifle, Bull's-eye and International Pistol events. Dan served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman. He is a life member of the NRA and a Distinguished Pistol Shot. |

C. R. (Van) VanDerscoff III Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Van retired from the Connecticut State Police Department in 1991 after 23 years of service, spending his last 6 years as a firearms instructor. Van is also a Vietnam veteran with three and a half years of active duty service in the U.S. Army. Since his retirement, Van has provided international training and consulting services both in the public and private sectors, specializing in firearms training and tactics. He gained significant recognition implementing training programs overseas. He currently is the lead law enforcement firearms instructor for Beretta U.S.A. Corp., where his duties include research, development, scheduling and teaching tactical shooting schools, transitional training courses and in-field armorer courses on the Beretta pistols. Van holds an Associate of Science degree from Springfield Technical Community College in Police Science and Administration and is a member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers (ASLET), the Connecticut State Police Alumni Association, the Police Association of Connecticut, and the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW). Van also is a Medal of Honor recipient from the Connecticut State Police (1986), is an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, and is a life member of the NRA. |
Dave Weber Adjunct Instructor Law Enforcement Training |
Dave is a former Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, having served for 28 years before retiring as a Supervisory Special Agent. While with the FBI, Dave worked for 24 of those years as an investigator while splitting time working on the SWAT team of his various field office assignments. Dave also worked at the field office level in the Police and Agent training section where he was involved in defensive tactics, fitness, sniper and firearm instructor. Prior to his employment with the FBI, Dave served in Vietnam as a Marine Corps officer for three years being honorably discharged in 1972. | |
